Personalize your wedding table with a homemade Coptic stitch guest book. The Coptic stitch is the name of a specific way of hand sewing the pages of the book together. Personalize the guest book by selecting paper that compliments the colors you have chosen for the wedding. Make the cover from 100 pound paper to protect the pages. 100 pound paper is found at hobby and craft stores or on-line.
Things You'll Need:
Groups of 5 pieces of 8 ½-by 11-inch 20 pound paper (this is normal regular paper weight)
2 pieces of 9-by-12-inch piece of 100 pound paper
Ruler
Pencil
Heavy darning needle
Heavy thread (buttonhole thread, pearl cotton, embroidery floss, catgut, sinew and so on)
Scissors
Instructions:
Step 1 - Match the 9-inch ends of the 100 pound paper. Crease the fold firmly. Repeat the process with the second sheet. Set aside.
Step 2 - Match the 8 ½-inch ends of the 20 pound paper. Crease the fold firmly. Repeat the process with the desired number of pages using groups of 5 as a guideline. Set aside.
Step 3 - Open the 100 pound paper. Place a mark on the fold line at 1 ½, 3, 4 ½, 6 and 7 ½-inches. Poke a hole through the paper at each mark with a heavy darning needle. Repeat the process with the second sheet.
Step 4 - Open the 20 pound paper. Place a mark on the fold line at 1 ¼, 2 ¾, 4 ¼, 5 ¾ and 6 ¼-inches. Poke a hole through the paper at each mark with a heavy darning needle. Repeat the process with each sheet.
Step 5 - Stack 5 sheets of the 20 pound paper on top of one another. Fold along the crease line. Set aside. Repeat the process with the remaining pieces of paper.
Step 6 - Cut a length of heavy thread approximately 70-inches long. String the heavy darning needle with the heavy thread.
Step 7 - Place the folded piece of 100 pound paper so the fold line is facing you. Insert the end of the needle through the farthest hole to the right. Pull the heavy thread through the paper until a 3-inch tail is visible. Open the fold. Place the needle through the hole farthest to the left. Pull the thread through the hole until it is flush with the inside of the fold. Close the fold.
Step 8 - Place one group of 20 pound paper on top of the 100 pound paper. Position the 20 pound paper so the crease is facing you. Place the darning needle through the hole in the 20 pound paper farthest to the left. Insert the needle through the next hole to the right. Pull the heavy thread tight.
Step 9 - Place the darning needle through the second hole to the right on the 100 pound paper. Open the paper to make sure the needle is coming through correctly. Pull the thread leaving a 1-inch loop on the outside. Insert the needle back through the hole making sure to place it through the center of the loop. Pull the thread tight.
Step 10 - Insert the needle through the second hole on the 20 pound paper. Open the 20 pound paper and pull the thread through the paper leaving a 1-inch loop on the outside. Re-insert the needle through the same hole and through the loop on the outside of the fold. Pull the thread tight.
Step 11 - Insert the needle through the same hole again so it is on the inside of the 20 pound paper. Open the fold. Insert the needle in the next hole. Repeat Steps 9 through 11 to complete the remainder of the holes across the book.
Step 12- Add another group of five papers. Repeat the Coptic stitch process to attach the pages and the cover of the book.
Tips: Personalize the cover of the book with metallic writing, glitter, puff paint or other adornments. These books also make good gifts.
