Stitching: Using Spaced-Dyed Threads

There are many beautiful space-dyed threads available to stitcher's today. The texture of the pure silk thread is wonderful and adds a subtle shimmer and sheen to your work.

1. Look at the skein and cut the thread so that you can see where colors start and finish. Use a length of thread only while the colors are suiting the project. Avoid the cross stitcher's lament, 'I will waste thread' and do not use the whole thread if it's not appropriate.

2. When combining stranded cottons with space-dyed threads, compare the colors carefully along the length of the thread to check that the shades tone successfully.

3. When threading the needle, check that the color you intend to use is near the away waste knot.

4. Always complete each cross stitch- do not form in two journeys or the color sequence will be interrupted.

5. Manufacturers take great care to ensure that their threads are colorfast, but some spaced-dyed threads can be suspect. Read the label on the threads and take sensible precautions if you are likely to wash the project. If in any doubt, lay the stitching right side down on a clean , flat surface and using a damp white tissue, press the threads firmly, particularly red shades. If there is even a trace of color on the tissue, do not wash the project!

Algerian Eye- This pretty star-shaped stitch is a pulled stitch which means that when formed correctly holes are pulled in the fabric. It could be worked over two or four threads of 'evenweave' and is more successful worked on 'evenweave' than 'Aida'.

1. Start to the left of a vertical thread and work from left to right around each stitch in an anticlockwise direction (or vice versa but keeping each stitch the same).

2. Always work the stitch by passing the needle down through the central hole, pulling quite firmly so that a small hole is formed in the center. Take care that trailing threads do not cover this hole as you progress to the next stitch.

Backstitch- Backstitch is used for outlining a design or part of a design , to add detail or emphasis, or for lettering. It is usually showed on a chart by solid lines with the suggested shade showed on the chart or key. It is added after the cross stitch has been completed, to prevent the backstitch line being broken by the cross stitches.
