Helpful Sewing Tips for Beginners
Just learning to sew? You'll love it especially if you learn a few tricks and tips!
It's important to keep the machine clean and well-oiled. Lint, dust and other debris can clog and cause further damage to the machine. Your instruction manual will introduce you to the oiling holes of the machine and will advise you about how often to oil it. Do this religiously to keep the machine up to par. Purchasing pressurized air in a can will help you keep the inner workings dust-free.
Using the correct needle and thread are also very important. Using a large needle - like a 16 - on delicate lingerie fabric, for example, will cause visible holes. You could also have trouble with the large needle shoving the fabric down into the bobbin casing. On the other hand, using a small needle - like an 11- on heavy fabrics can cause trouble as well. The small needles can break repeatedly under the pressure.
Many patterns recommend needle and thread sizes for their specific projects. You can also get help choosing needles and thread, appropriate for the job, from most clerks. They can help you select threads which exactly match the fabrics you've chosen or threads which coordinate with the fabrics. Choosing thread that exactly matches means your finished project will look fabulous.
Learn to use the guides on the machine. One simple guide is to allow the side of the foot to run at the edge of the fabric, all the way down a seam. Keeping the foot aligned with the fabric's edge creates a perfectly straight stitch. Stitch slowly to ensure you don't waver from the edge. It's better to sew slowly, and have perfection, than to zip through it and have errors. There are additional guides engraved into the face plate. These are labeled as ½", 1/4" and so on. The guides are a huge help when learning to sew a straight line.
When starting to stitch anything be sure to hold the needle and bobbin thread. Holding them taut during the first couple of stitches will ensure they don't get tangled up in the bobbin casing. This is an important step that you need to perform each and every time you sew - even as you become expert. When you get to the end of the seam or other stitched area make sure you back-tack every time. The back-tack keeps the threads from coming undone at the ends.
Some machines are simplistic whereas others offer a world of options for decorative stitching. Anyone who sews will definitely want to try out all the fancy stitching, but first familiarize yourself with the basic stitches: The straight stitch is suitable for seaming, hemming and general sewing efforts. The straight stitch is adjustable in length. Use tiny stitches to sew fabrics that easily unravel or delicate, wispy fabrics. Use a longer stitch for materials that stretch. The long stitch is ideal, as well, for sewing on narrow elastic.
The zig-zag is another basic stitch which is also adjustable. Use a wide zig-zag, not close together, to stitch wide elastic and other stretchy materials. Make the zig-zag stitch closer together to create decorative stitching around hems and sleeves. When sewing lacy fabrics the zig-zag can be helpful in catching threads in a design that has large spaces between threads.
Start with simple patterns and learn the markings and such. The patterns have guides which will help you place pieces at the proper angles, select appropriate fabrics, and even raise or lower hemlines. Patterns aren't as complicated as they may seem. Take the time to read the entire instruction page and you'll have it down-pat.
You may get frustrated when needles break, threads tangle, and stitches just don't look right. Don't give up, though. Sewing is fun and rewarding, saves you a fortune in clothing and decor, and is an art you can use the rest of your life. Keep trying. One day you'll wake up and realize that you've become an expert!
