Something made to do one job can often be used for something so different. Examples include stacking tires, and turning them into a boy's night stand, or taking an old tub out into the yard, and making it into a garden. So, if you're organizing your sewing room, and you need a little help, don't shop at a craft store; go to a home improvement store. There, they sell items that a person doing construction work might use, and that's where you'll find what you need, too. A large magnet, which has many different uses, can make life easier in your sewing room. It can organize bobbins, needles, pins, and so much more.
A bar magnet, often used to drag through a yard and find nails that may have been dropped after a roofing job, works well to organize a sewing room. The magnet will have either a hole for tying in a rope, or a hole with a rope already attached. If you want to replace the utilitarian look of the rope with a pretty ribbon, go ahead. Hang the bar on a push-pin or nail. Another option is to buy and install a magnet that is hung with screws.
Bobbins that are empty, or wound with thread - as long as they are metal - will stick right to the bar magnet. Align them in rows by color or by another method. Since bar magnets come in an assortment of sizes, you can choose just the one that you need for your sewing notions. Use a small bar magnet, and have it hold just bobbins, or use a larger magnet, and it can organize needles, pins, and more.
Stick needles and pins to the magnet so that the sharp end is on the magnet and the opposite end protrudes enough to easily grab it. Organize other notions by using magnetic hooks. They, too, can be found at a home improvement store. Stick a row of them to the magnet and use them to hold elastic, ribbon, rickrack, and assorted trims.
There are other metallic things that you might use in your sewing room, like tiny screwdrivers, or replacement feet. These, too, can be stuck to the bar magnet, and neatly organized. Hang one magnet, or more than one, to create the arrangement that you want for the organizer. The magnet can hang on the wall, on the side of a cabinet, or on the table of the sewing machine.
