How to Start a Sewing Blog

A guide for sewers who want to learn how to start a blog about sewing.

Blog Hosting

The first thing you should consider before starting a sewing blog is what type of blog host you want to choose. There are close to hundreds of blogs hosts on the internet: some good and some not so good. However, the two popular blog hosts that are leading the pack of great blog hosts are Blogger and Wordpress. Both Blogger and Wordpress are great for beginners who do not know anything about html or building their own websites; with these two hosts, you simply have to register and choose a template.

I would recommend Blogger for those who have absolutely no idea how to build a website and have no idea what html is. Blogger pretty much does everything for you: it has fonts listed for you to choose from which you can change to ones listed in Microsoft Word if you know how to switch over to the html view to change the font of your liking. It is easy to add gadgets to your blog from the list of gadget buttons Blogger offers you, and adding pictures is probably the best in my opinion because you can either upload the picture from your computer or find a link to one online with the click of one button. You also have the option of following other blogs whether or not they are registered on Blogger which will appear on your dashboard once you login. Blogger has recently updated their templates which is great because they have more options of what you want your background to be, and if you have some experience with html, you can design your own template. It is that easy and all you have to do is register for an email account with Google, and then login with that information at the Blogger homepage.

Wordpress on the other hand, is a little more advance but still maintains some of the simplicity that Blogger has. With Wordpress, you don't need a specific email address to register for a blog, but the rest of the process is the same as Blogger. The neat thing about Wordpress is that it has a built-in traffic monitor; therefore, you don't have to be bothered with trying to find a site that you have to register with to keep up with the traffic coming to your website. Although the choices for templates are slim for those using the Wordpress hosting platform, they are well built and many of them come with social gadgets such as Digg and other popular social sites for bloggers to share information about their blog. However, in order to gain access to their better selection of templates, you have to pay a fee which can be pretty steep if you can't afford fifty dollars or more per month, but it is worth it if you are looking to create a professional image online.

Both Blogger and Wordpress have both their pros and cons; however, I would recommend that you take your time to really explore both sites to see which one will benefit you the most before making a decision.

Content

Any seasoned blogger will tell you that content is one of the most important things when it comes to starting a blog because it is the heart of the blog, and it is what will either keep readers coming back or having none at all. Before you create your content, you need to think about what are you trying to convey with your sewing blog. Are you a newbie to sewing and want to document your progress in sewing? Are you a fashion design student showing both your class work and work you have done outside the classroom? Are you looking to start an apparel business and testing out the market for potential customers? Your reason(s) for creating your sewing blog need to be clear so that once you begin to write, you will have no problems typing out quality content because there is nothing worse than reading an unfocused blog. You should also include reviews of sewing products to help other sewers with their purchasing decision because it will attract more readers as well as boost your content level.

Pictures

Regardless of whether you're a novice sewer or a professional, your sewing blog must have some visual aspect to it. Without pictures, how will you fully be able to show off your work? When it comes to taking pictures, I would not recommend using a camera phone of any kind because you want to have quality pictures which would come better from a digital camera. I am not a camera expert in the slightest; however, I would recommend either getting a Nikon digital camera or a Kodak digital camera. I personally like the Nikon digital cameras because you get professional pictures as well as a hand remote to take pictures if no one is around to take the picture for you. I must warn you that the Nikon digital cameras in the SLR series can be on the higher end of the budget, but it is well worth it if you can find a great deal which is where you want to look at Best Buy. The Kodak digital cameras are great as well because they have the quality of a professional photographer's camera without needing to read a book or take a class. I like how everything is at the tip of your finger, and that they have menus in which will help you decide on a particular function to take pictures. Personally, I think the Kodak cameras are a good investment as well because they tend to be on the lower end of the budget with great quality and gadgets. You will also like the fact that Kodak has its own printer designed specifically for printing out pictures which is sold separately. I would say shop around for deals and definitely stop by HSN because they always give you hundreds of dollars worth of Kodak products FREE with the purchase of a Kodak camera.

Bringing in Traffic

Deciding on how to bring traffic to your website should be the easiest part to creating your sewing blog because it just requires your great personality and social skills online. In order to get traffic to your blog, you have to make it visible (indexed) in search engines such as Yahoo and Google. If you want to add your blog to Google yourself, you can go to Google Blog Search where you can add you blog's address or to Add your URL to Google . For Yahoo, you can submit your address at Yahoo's site explorer page . If you don't want to add your blog yourself, you can register with blog social networks such as Digg, Technorati, Blog Catalog, Networked Blogs, and many more. Blog social networks are ubiquitous, however, I would find social networks that you like and will actually be active with. By signing up with blog social networks, your blog will automatically be indexed into Google and Yahoo which takes the pressure off of you.

Besides signing up with social networks for blogs, search the internet for both random blogs and blogs you like and comment on them. Interact with the author of those blogs and develop a relationship with them because they could be potential readers. However, when it comes to commenting on blogs, try to leave more than an one sentence comment because those are the most aggravating which tells the author the reader does not have a real opinion of what they wrote or if they read the post in its entirety. Be sincere and genuine when commenting, and do not advertise your blog on their site unless the author gives you permission. Have them check out your blog and ask that they leave comments. Not only will you be building alliances in the blogging community but readership as well.

Earning Money

If you are looking to earn money from your sewing blog, Google Adsense is a popular way to do so which is why I love Blogger so much because it is easy to setup Google Adsense on their blog. In order to register for Google Adsense, you will have to have a Google account which if you have a blog on Blogger, that is one step you can skip. Google Adsense has a variety of ways to make money. Some like to place ads on their blogs which I do not do because no one really clicks on ads, especially those who worry about the safety of their computer. One popular method I have found which makes a lot of money is the search box provided by Google Adsense. Have you ever gone to a website and seen a search box with Google in the background? Well, if you have and did a search on it, you helped the author or creator of the site make money off your search. The search box is a great thing to have on your site because everyone has to search on a site they are on at some point, and you are not bombarding your readers with a bunch of ads. So, if you do decide to go the route of the search box to make money do not forget that every time someone does a search on your blog using that box, they are helping you earn money. Therefore, I would suggest you have plenty of content for your readers to search through.

When you think about it, starting your own sewing blog should be an easy and fun thing to do. It does take work on your part and a lot of patience, but if you have the determination to make your sewing blog a success, you should have no problem creating a blog that people will want to read as well as one you can make a little extra money from.
