Sewing Machine Needle Organizer
Here's a way to organize your sewing machine needles so that you'll always know their sizes.
It's not really easy to just look at a sewing machine needle and tell what size it is. Sure, if you're holding a small and a large gauge needle together, side-by-side, you can see that one is larger than the other. But, if you just glance at a container of sewing machine needles it can be hard to tell one from another. Although the size is imprinted into the needle the print is so tiny that few people would be able to read it. There's a fun craft you can do that requires just a bit of sewing, but when you're finished, you'll have a system that lets you easily spot the needle you need for the job.
Sew small pillows to make a sewing machine needle organizer that's perfect for separating needles of various sizes. Just cut two small squares of fabric to start. Stack the fabric pieces so that their right sides are facing each other. Sew around the perimeter of the pillow but leave a space on one side so that you can turn the pillow right-side-out. After doing so, stuff the pillow with cotton or batting and sew the opening shut.
Make a different pillow for each type of needle using the fabric itself as the way to identify them. For example, sew a tiny denim pillow, stuff it, then stick heavy-gauge needles in it. Sew a tiny satin pillow to hold small-gauge needles. Now, when you just look at the particular pin cushions, you can instantly see what type of needles are in it by the type of fabric on the pillow.
Set the needle pillows close to the sewing machine, and whenever you need one, just select the appropriate size. Remove the old needle and place it on the proper pillow, depending upon the size of it. You'll never dig through a drawer full of needles to find the right one again!
