Stop Needling Me

What are the different types of hand-sewing needles? Which one do you need to get the job done? Check it out.

The first sewing needles were made from bone or wood and now are made of metals. Needle sizes usually run from size 1 which is very heavy to size 10, very fine. When choosing a needle size make sure you know what fabric you are using, or at least whether it is light weight or heavy or thick. Today you can buy packs of needles that come with various sizes for all different projects.

If you are a sewer you know there are two categories for needles...hand and machine. I generally hand sew my projects, but on occasion I do use a sewing machine. We are going to concentrate on hand needles. Hand sewing needles have an eye (where the thread goes through) and a shaft. Hand needles have different names depending on their purpose.

Sharps. These needles are used for general sewing.

Embroidery or Crewel. These are similar to sharps, but have a longer and often wider eye to hold multiple threads or heavy yarns.

Quilting or Betweens. These are usually shorter and have a rounder eye and are used for making finer stitches on heavy fabrics.

Milliner's. These are long needles used for basting and pleating and people who make hats a.k.a milliners.

Easy or Self-Threading. They claim these are the easiest needles to use. They are also called Calyx Sharps. They have a slot for the thread instead of an eye. Basically you put the thread on top and sort of guide it down. I must be spastic because find these to be impossible to thread in any way shape or fashion.

Side Threading Needles. These are also called Spiral Eye Needles. It is basically what it says. There is a slot on the side of the needle for one to put the thread through. It's supposed to keep the thread from shifting too much when you are working with it.

The above are the basic types of needles. Below we are going to examine specialty needles.

Ballpoints. No these are not made by Bic. These are needles that are rounded at the point and are used on knitted fabrics.

Beading. Beading needles run from size 10-15 (ultrafine). They are very thing and long to hold a large number of beads. You must use them with care because they are very easy to break.

Bodkin. This needle is long and thick, has a ballpoint and an elongated eye that is quite large. They can be flat or round and are used for threading elastic or ribbon through casings and lace holes.

Chenille. They are similar to tapestry needles but have very large and long eyes and a very very sharp point to go through tightly weaved fabrics.

Darning. This is the needle you use for mending your socks ( a rare occurrence this day and age). It has a blunt tip and large eye. Sizes range from 1 to 18.

a) Cotton Darners. These are used for cotton or wool.
b) Double Longs. These are the ones most likely used on socks. They are used for mending large holes.
c) Yarn Darners. These are designed for when you darn with yarn.

Doll. This needle is long and thin and is used for dolls that are soft made (meaning not ceramic or china,etc.). Doll needles are often used to make faces on the doll.

Leather or Glovers. Leather needles have a triangular point so they do not tear the leather. It can be used on plastic, leather, suede or vinyl.

Sailmaker. These needles also have a triangular point but the point goes farther up the shaft of the needle. It is great for sewing thick canvases and leathers.

Tapestry. Tapestry needles have a large eye and a blunt tip. They are used for embroidery on canvas (or plastic canvas), and other materials that aren't so tightly woven. There are double edged tapestry needles (which I haven't yet seen) that have the eye in the middle. This is for embroiderers who work with fabric in a frame.

Tatting. Tatting is a way of making lace. Lace can be bobbin made or needle made. Tatting needles are long and the same length for the entire needle.

Upholstery. These needles are generally thick. They can be straight or curved, though I will be honest I have never seen one that was straight.
