Tips and Hints for Sewing Vinyl
Vinyl can be a real challenge when it comes to sewing. Here's a few tips to help you be successful.
Sewing vinyl on an ordinary home sewing machine can cause you several problems. First of all, even the largest needle can have trouble going through several layers of vinyl. It's best to use an industrial machine when working with any type of vinyl. An industrial machine runs a very thick thread, and very large needle, making it much easier to create things from vinyl.
If you're working on an upholstery project it might be necessary to sew welt. Welt is a cord that is wrapped in vinyl or fabric, depending upon the project you're doing, and is sewn between layers of the vinyl. A welt foot isn't something many machines come equipped with but you can get by using the zipper foot.
Wrap a strip of vinyl around the piece of welt. Sew close to the welt but not too close. When you later stitch the welt to a cushion or other area, you'll sew as closely as you can to the welt. If you stitch really close while making the welt people will be able to see the stitches after you sew the welt to cushions or other places. Also, if you later need to correct errors, you won't be as likely to see the needle holes left by the erred stitching.
If you have made an error, and need to remove stitches, there will always be needle holes with which to contend. Use a hair dryer, and rub your finger across the holes, to help seal them. The hair dryer can also come in handy when it comes to putting the sewn vinyl onto a chair or couch. Vinyl can be cold and stiff causing all sorts of problems. Use the hair dryer on difficult areas and you'll be able to stretch and otherwise manipulate the vinyl.
Use a wide strip of vinyl to create welt. When sewing welt around a couch cushion or other curvy areas you'll find the welt difficult to turn. To create the perfect corner make small slits in the vinyl around the welt. These slits will help the welt bend and curve making it much easier to 90 degree angles.
When hemming vinyl there's no need to fold it over once, then again, before stitching. Vinyl will not unravel so folding the hem only once will work much better. Folding the material twice will cause bulkiness that will ruin the entire look. Make sure to back-tack all hems and some other areas. Places where the vinyl has been stitched, and where you'll need to pull hard to get it on the object, will need to be back-tacked.
Vinyl should be at least room temperature before you begin to sew. Although you can measure and cut cold vinyl you'll find it extremely difficult to sew and attach to objects. If vinyl is being brought from a cold area to your work area allow some time for it to warm. Vinyl can be stretched out on a flat surface, outside, and the sun will make it much more supple. Heat lamps can also be used - with care! Heat lamps don't have to come in contact with the vinyl to ruin it. They can leave burn marks or even ripples in the vinyl.
When stapling vinyl onto a chair or other object take care with how the staples are inserted. Running staples parallel to the hem, etc., can be risky. With use the staples will eventually cause a tear in the vinyl. Instead, staple at 90 degree angles to the edge of the vinyl. For example, when putting a skirt on a chair, staple vertically rather than horizontally.
Using something called tack strip will also help staples stay put. The strip is a narrow piece of cardboard that is placed over the vinyl before stapling. In areas such as the skirt of a chair, the tack strip will prevent staples from pulling out easily.
Working with vinyl is challenging but it doesn't have to be daunting. You'll have the perfect outcome if you keep it warm and use the right size needle and thread. Practice on some scrap pieces to perfect your technique and you'll be upholstering or creating other vinyl projects that truly impress.
