National Sewing Month Project to Make Reversible Throw Pillows from Upholstery Fabric Swatches
Reversible throw pillows make a great addition to any dcor, and also make excellent gifts. Plus, the cost of this project is very inexpensive, because what would have been the most expensive part of the project, the fabric, was free!
My favorite projects are ones that involve what would otherwise be considered trash. And believe it or not, perfectly good fabric gets thrown away all the time in the form of upholstery fabric swatch books! Fabric companies and furniture makers alike are constantly changing their selection of fabrics, much like fashion lines change from season to season and cars change from year to year. With each new collection of fabrics, furniture retailers and upholsterers are sent new swatch books containing the latest selection of patterns and colors. All too often, the old swatch books are simply disposed of.
Call around or stop in to your local upholstery shop or anywhere that sells furniture to inquire about the availability of swatch books. You will find that most places are more than happy to give them away, as they would be throwing them out anyway, and would usually rather see the fabric actually be used for something!
Upholstery fabric is ideal for making throw pillows because it is available in a wide array of patterns and colors, and it is generally heavy-duty fabric and often is stain resistant.
Getting Started
First, you will want to separate all of the fabric swatches from the rest of the book, which will likely contain information about the fabrics. The method for separating the fabric from the book will vary depending how it is attached. There are two standard ways that fabric swatches are put into books, and you will often find both methods used in the same book.
Some of the swatches will be full "pages," which will be attached to the large rings of the swatch book with grommets. The easiest way to remove these fabric swatches is to carefully cut around the grommets to free the fabric from the book.
You will probably also have a lot of half-sheets of fabric, which are usually glued or sewn to a piece of heavy paper that makes up the rest of the page, and usually has information about the fabric. These sheets can be removed by simply peeling or tearing them off of their paper backings. You may find that some on the bits of paper are stubborn and difficult to remove from the back of the fabric. In this case, place a wet wash cloth on top of the stubborn paper bits. Wetting them should loosen the glue and make them easy to remove.
Picking Coordinating Fabric Swatches
Once your fabric has been separated from the swatch book, you can pick out fabrics that coordinate well with each other. The larger, full-size fabric sheets can easily be use in pairs to make your pillows, and will require less sewing and therefore less time.
Smaller swatches can be sewn together into blocks to make the front and back of your pillow.
If you are using full-sized sheets, pick two swatches that coordinate well. If you are using half-sized sheets, find four fabrics that match.
Assembling Your Pillow
If you are using full-sized sheets, assembling your pillow is easy. Cut your fabric down to a square if you wish, place the facing sides together, and sew most of the way around. Leave a small gap of several inches in your sewn edge and turn your pillow right-side-out through this gap. Stuff your pillow with polyester fiberfill (or your filler material of choice). Carefully tuck in the unsewn portion of your edge and sew the hole shut. Voila, a finished pillow!
If you are using smaller swatches, you will first need to sew the front and back panels together before you can proceed as above. The simplest way to assemble your swatches is to simply sew them together across the long edge to form a panel for your throw pillow, making a pillow with two strips of fabric on each side.
You can also cut the fabric swatches down further and sew them back together in a patchwork. For a pillow with a checkerboard pattern, make each panel by cutting two fabric swatches in half (cut the short way). Sew half of each swatch to half of the other, then sew the two pieces together. Arranged in this fashion, you should end up with a pillow that has four squares of two different fabrics on each side.
Once your panels are assembled, place them with facing sides together and sew around the edges, again leaving a gap for turning the pillow right-side-out and for stuffing it as well. Sew the gap shut, and you are done!
Reversible throw pillows make a great addition to any décor, and also make excellent gifts. Plus, the cost of this project is very inexpensive, because what would have been the most expensive part of the project, the fabric, was free!
