Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118 Sewing Machine Review
I've been a seamstress for 35 years and this is one amazing sewing machine. It has a ton of power to sew over multiple layers of cloth, and all the options you could want.
The only sewing machine I have ever owned is a Singer that was handed down to me when my mother passed away when I was 25 years old. This machine was "the best" in it's day, and is constructed of solid materials (some sort of metal), not the plastic materials we see so much of today. After hearing of friends complain of their plastic sewing machines, I didn't think that any machine would satisfactorily replace my Singer. However, one has come close, and it's the Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118.
Viking has been around for a long time, but I had never used their sewing machines until I used this one. My daughter owns this Husqvarna, and I am genuinely considering purchasing it myself, I was so impressed.
Description
This Husqvarna Viking Emerald machine is not nearly as heavy as my Singer, this model only weighs 16 pounds. It comes with a nice hard carrying case with a handle on top, and has two separate cords - one for power and one for the foot pedal, and they are both easily attached. It's easy to store away, and is a very attractive looking machine.
This machine comes with a 10 year warranty on all mechanical parts and a 1 year warranty on the electrical parts.
Functions
I thought my Singer had a lot of functions, but this Emerald 118 has a ton of great features, including:

Performance
All I can say is wow! What an amazing machine. I remember sewing with my Singer while the family was watching television (I didn't have a sewing room), and they would always complain about the noise. My daughter and I sewed table runners and a thick brocade shower curtain, and the machine was in the dining room. My husband and son-in-law were 15 feet away watching a movie, and they didn't complain once. This is one very quite machine!
When I used my Singer, I always had to be sure to stop sewing with the needle up, or my thread would pull through the needed when I started up again. This Husqvarna Emerald has taken the worry out of this, it has a setting so you can have the machine stop with the need up or down. Being able to stop with the needle down comes in very handy when I am doing applique work!
You can use the standby stitches for normal sewing and mending, but you can also sew with three needles at once (almost like using a serger to reinforce certain materials), or you can choose a plethora of decorative stitches for those special projects.
My Singer did button holes, but it was a little tricky as I had to use the zigzag stitch and basically make them on my own, and they never came out identical. This machine has an automatic buttonhole maker! You simply adjust the size you need according to the buttons you are using, and it makes them for you in one easy step.
There are two dials on the front right of the machine that allow you to quickly choose your stitch width and length. Filling bobbins has never been one of my favorite things to do, but this machine fills them just like my Singer does, on top of the machine instead of inside the bobbin case! I was thrilled to see this, as I hate machines that fill the bobbin inside the machine. Have you ever run out of bobbin thread while sewing? This Husqvarna Emerald 118 has a clear bobbin cover, so you can easily see when you are getting low on bobbin thread.
The arm is slim so you can easily sew hems in sleeves, pants, etc. They fit right over the arm and make this kind of work very easy. Just like my Singer this Viking has a slide on accessory box, simply remove it and you have the slim arm available to you.
I remember spending time doing maintenance on my Singer, oiling it to be sure it was properly lubricated. This Viking is permanently lubricated so you won't have to worry about this kind of upkeep.
There is one area where this Viking machine outshines my beloved Singer, and that is in it's power to sew through bulky fabric! This one has a way to adjust the pressure foot so you can adjust it according to the kind and weight of fabric you are using. When I made the brocade shower curtain, I was using a very heavy and thick material. The fabric wasn't quite wide enough to go across the shower, so I had to piece it which meant having a seam in the middle. Since I didn't want the seam to fray, I stitched it with a french stitch. For those not familiar with this kind of seam, you sew the wrong sides together first, then sew the right sides together as normal. This leaves you with a folded edge instead of a raw seam on the wrong side of the fabric.
While french seams are wonderful, they add a ton of bulk to the project, especially when you are sewing with heavy material to begin with. This Husqvarna Viking Emerald 118 machine pulled the fabric right through WITH EASE! I was, in a word, amazed at the power this sewing machine has!
There is only one complaint I have, and that is the way the reverse button works. It is located conveniently, just to the lower right of the machine, but you have to push the button down and hold it down to make it go in reverse. I felt I needed two hands to direct my fabric through, and having to use one hand to hold the reverse button down was not at all convenient. I suppose one would get used to it in time, but I prefer my Singer's style, where I just lift up on the stitch length lever and it stays in place until I am ready to get it out of the reverse mode.
To conclude this lengthy review, I love this machine and highly recommend it. My daughter paid around $500 for it on sale, and I consider that a great price for a quality sewing machine.
