Beginner Sewing Projects: Assorted Pillows Anyone Can Make
You might not know this but most pillows are really very easy to make. Here are some tips that will make them even easier!
Make a pillow for a sofa, chair or bed by simply cutting two identical squares of fabric. Pin them together, sew around them, but leave a small opening on one side. The opening should be centered and should not be at a corner. Turn the pillow, stuff it, then sew it shut with machine or needle and thread. The needle technique will leave a much nicer finish that stitching it with a machine. Although this basic pillow is very easy to make it can be enhanced for little more effort. Add welt to the perimeter of the pillow and it will completely change the look. It's easy to create welt. Just cut strips of fabric, wrap them around a length of cord, then stitch close to the cord. Now sew the welt onto the perimeter of one of the squares. Sew the second square on, leaving an opening for turning the pillow. Make the ends of the welt come together nicely by cutting the ending of the welt to butt against the beginning of the welt. When you do this, cut just the welt and not the welt-covering fabric. Now you can tuck the beginning of the welt into the fabric of the welt end. Stitch over it to secure.
Buttons can be added to most any pillow when you purchase a button-making kit from a store that sells fabrics and supplies. The kits are available in several different sizes and make it easy to create the buttons you want. Use a really long needle to push the thread through the pillow to hold on the buttons. You can also drop a scrap of material off at an upholstery shop and they'll be happy to make a few buttons for you. You can select different sizes and can probably wait while the buttons are made. It only takes a few minutes; go ahead and pick up a long needle while you wait! Measure the pillow's with and height to find the exact center for placing the button.
Make round pillows by cutting the fabric to the size of circles you want. Both pieces should be cut exactly the same and pinned together. Concentrate on keeping the presser foot right against the edge of the fabric pieces as you sew around them. Of course, leave an opening anywhere around the circle to turn the pillow. If you'll be adding welt sew it onto one circle first, then the other. After sewing the welt to the first circle, align the second circle with the first, then pin together. Make sure you've finished the wet piece so that the ends are smoothly sewn together before attaching the second circle to the first.
The above circular pillow can have a button, if you want, but will look completely different than a second circular pillow you can make. With this one, you don't cut circles. Instead, you cut a long, very wide band. Cut the band in half lengthways then stitch your went in between. This pillow can be sewn without the welt but has a much nicer look when welt is used. After attaching the welt sew the two ends of the band together. Turn it so that the seam is on the inside. Use a needle and thread to stitch along one edge of the band. Pull one thread to gather the entire length. Gather the material as you pull the one thread so that you can create the pleats and gathers for the pillow. Pull the thread as tightly as possible to gather the material tightly. Do the same to the opposite side. Use a large button on each side so that it well covers the small opening that remains after gathering the sides.
Make a cylindrical pillow by cutting the two end circles. Measure around the circle and add a couple of inches to that measurement. Cut a rectangle that is the length of the measurement you just took. Decide how long you want the pillow to be and cut the rectangle cloth piece to that width. Stitch the rectangle around one circle, then around the other. As you get to the end of the first circle, fold the excess material under a couple of inches, then continue sewing. Do the same to the opposite side as you sew it. There will be an opening that runs the length of the pillow. Use this area to stuff the pillow then use needle and thread to sew it shut.
