Floating Technique for Machine Embroidery
The floating technique used in machine embroidery is a relatively easy procedure. The process involves using a sticky stabilizer to secure the fabric rather than securing the top of the embroidery hoop.
Sticky Sulky is an excellent brand of sticky stabilizer to use for the floating technique. This brand offers a gridded background and a sticky surface that allows for easy release of the embroidered design upon completion. There are other brands of sticky stabilizer available that may be used. Sticky Sulky is a brand that is widely used by machine embroiders and one that I have used personally.
The process to do the floating technique is easy.
Secure the sticky stabilizer in the embroidery hope making sure that a minimum of 1" of sticky stabilizer is exposed around the outside of the hoop. Score the paper backing and remove it from the stabilizer.
After removing the sticky back paper, mark the fabric in the hoop. Use the hoop's grid template to mark the straightline center along with the right and left edges. Caution: Do not touch the grid template to the sticky back paper or the grid template will stick. It will be rather difficult to remove it from the sticky back paper.
When marking the fabric to be embroidered, make sure to mark the right and left edges along with the straightline center on the right side of the fabric. Fold the marked fabric on the straightline making sure to fold the right sides of the fabric together. Match the fold with the straightline on the sticky back paper in the embroidery hoop. Unfold the fabric and smooth on to the sticky stabilizer making sure the wrong side of the fabric is down.
Before embroidering, tack the edges of the fabric that go past the hoop to the excess sticky stabilizer. This is done to prevent the edges of the fabric from accidentally getting embroidered into the design.
Attach the hoop to the embroidery sewing machine. Make sure to place a piece of stabilizer between the needle and the hoop plate. Set the embroidery hoop. Begin embroidering the design according to the embroidery sewing machine's directions.
When the embroidery design is complete, remove the hoop from the embroidery sewing machine. Remove the floating stabilizer. Next, carefully pull the embroidered fabric away from the sticky stabilizer. With a small scissors cut off any extra stabilizer from the back of the design. Press if needed. The design is now complete.
The process is very similar to regular machine embroidery. The floating technique allows small items to be embroidered that could not be secured properly in an embroidery hoop in the tradition way.
