How to Make a Ribbon Square for Your Baby
Here are instructions on how to make a multi-sensory, interactive toy for your young baby using your sewing machine.
Supplies need:
Two squares of contrasting washable fabric at least 6" by 10" (I used flannel and satin)
8-20 small pieces of ribbon, rick rack, and trim in a variety of colors and textures at least 6" long (it is a good idea to make sure that none of the ribbon has any wire in it and it is machine washable)

Now take both pieces of fabric. They need to be the same size but they can be any shape you want. The first one I made was a triangle and the second one I made was a long rectangle. Pick one of your pieces of fabric and lay it face up on the table. Now comes the fun part. Start laying out your ribbons and trim pieces and figure out how you want them to go. Fool around with textures and colors.
Once you have the ribbons laid out the way you want go ahead and pin them to the edges of your fabric. Fold the ribbon in half so that the two cut ends are together and line up with one of the raw edges of your fabric. Make sure that the loop portion of the ribbon is pointing in toward the center of your block. Pin the ribbon in place. Repeat until all your ribbons are pinned.
Take your fabric to the sewing machine and stitch around all sides with a scant 1/4" seam allowance, going over the edges of the ribbons and making sure the loops are pointing toward the middle. Next you are going to place the right sides of both of your fabric pieces together lining up the edges. Sew around the sides again, this time using a 1/4" seam allowance so that you are sewing inside your previous stitch line. Be sure to leave at least a 3" opening on one side so that you can turn your square inside out. Once you are done stitching turn your block right side out. You will need to slip stitch the opening closed so that you cover the rough edges of your ribbons. You may want to top-stitch around the edges one more time to help it lie flat and to add one more line of stitching for resistance of pulling the ribbons out. Then go ahead and give it to your baby.
To customize these for your baby, think about your fabric choices, and what ribbons you pick out, if your nursery is a pooh theme, than you could use pooh fabric and maybe some of the ribbons could be yellow and black, for example.
The first tag squares I made for my now two year old are being used by my three month old. My two year old had decided the squares were boring until she saw her sister playing with them, and now they are exciting again and get worn as hats, used for doll blankets and more. If you have some sewing experience this is an under a half hour project.
