Defiance is the Biggest Nazi Germany Film Since Last Week
"Defiance" tells the true story of three Jewish brothers who formed a resistance against Nazis in the woods, along with thousands of survivors. But it is only yet another Nazi Germany/WWII story this fall.
The ads for Defiance promise to tell an incredible true story that has never been told. In the early 1940's, three Jewish brothers who lost their parents to the Holocaust have to hide in the forests of Belarus to stay alive, after killing several Nazis.
But what started as an act of vengeance became a defiant act of freedom, after several thousand more Jews fled into those same woods. Gradually, the brothers forged a new community with these fellow survivors, and trained them to fight back against Nazi attacks.
That rarest of breeds- a Holocaust action movie- appears to describe Defiance, especially in the ads and trailers. Director Edward Zwick is used to blending history, historical lecturing and action in films like Glory, Legends of the Fall, The Siege, The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond. But this makes Defiance slightly more different than the other Nazi Germany films of the fall.
With Daniel Craig in the lead, Defiance can be easily categorized as having James Bond shoot up some Nazis. Perhaps Craig will be even more somber in action scenes than he was as Bond in Quantum of Solace. Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell help him out as his brothers.
Overall, Defiance is probably less action packed and star-studded than Valkyrie, where Nazis fought back against Nazis under Tom Cruise's leadership. Defiance takes place in the middle of the war, whereas Viggo Mortenson's Good takes place during the initial rise of Nazism.
As for love, Defiance doesn't have a romance between a female Nazi and a teen, unlike Kate Winslet's The Reader. Also, Defiance isn't a tale of friendship between a boy and a locked up Jewish child, unlike The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
What Defiance is also trying to be is an epic tale that might be good for the odd Oscar attention. However, early reviews for Defiance are pretty mixed, like most of the Holocaust/Germany movies this year.
Rotten Tomatoes gives Defiance a 46% positive rating so far, saying that it "lacks the emotional punch of the actual history."
So far, Defiance is only open in a couple of New York and Los Angeles theaters. On January 16, it will have a wider release.
