The Emergence of Tablets - Has Time Run Out for the PC?
The Apple iPad, Motorola Xoom, and Galaxy Tab are all very capable, very portable tablets, but do they have what it takes to take the crown from the current kings of the computing world? Should the PC, Laptops, and Netbooks be worried?
Tablets - Are they fad or foe to PC's?
There are many great things that tablets can do. In fact they can do just about everything that more traditional PCs can do. Couple in the fact that they are ultra-portable and you can quickly understand why people are saying that tablets will be the death of home computers, laptops, and netbooks.
There have been many pieces of technology through the years that were touted as potential PC killers which ultimately fell by the wayside; one of those pieces of technology was ironically made by Apple.
Technology of days gone by
The Apple MessagePad was a PDA that featured hand-writing recognition, and could store information and run programs that most computers could run back in 1993. The MessagePad, or Newton as it came to be known, was expensive, with prices starting at $700 and rising to over $1000.
The Newton was arguably ahead of its time and became the butt of jokes with comedians because of its bad hand-writing recognition. Apple stopped making the Newton in 1998, but ultimately it started the PDA wars, which eventually led into the smartphone wars, which then evolved into the tablets we have today. So saying it failed completely would be wrong. No, it did not oust the PC, but it did lead us to where we are today in regards to tablets.
Will history repeat itself?
There are many things could be learned from the Newton and any new portable technology. While having a tablet is great, they can be expensive. The current entry level model for the iPad 2 is $499. That will get you 16GB of storage, a dual core processor, and the ability to connect to Wi-Fi. Throw in the Bluetooth keyboard, the camera dock, and the video out connector, and you can add another $130.
While that might not sound like a lot for people who want to be on the go, you could buy a laptop with twice the specifications for under $500, and if you were to build your own PC at home, you could get twice the specifications for under $400. When looking at tablets, it will be price and price alone that will stop them from ousting the laptop and home PC, not to mention that right now there are some things that cannot be done on your tablet without connecting it to a PC first.
As of right now tablets are just not powerful enough to handle graphically intense applications such as Photoshop, and are not powerful enough to do great video editing, (although the iPad 2 has a good crack at it). I just cannot see iPads, Xoom's or Galaxy Tabs replacing the personal computer.
Setting the bar
PC component manufacturers continue to set the bar. When it comes to the latest and greatest cutting edge computer technology, the PC is used as a tool to see what technology works and what doesn't. This will help ensure that PCs will be here for a long time to come. Manufacturers of tablets look at the PC world to see what is working so they then can incorporate successful technology into the world of tablets. It is a cycle that will be hard to break.
While tablets are a welcome addition to the world of technology, I do not believe that the more traditional computer will be going anywhere soon. When prices of the technology come down a little more, I can see them becoming more prevalent. Until then the PC, Laptops, and netbooks will remain king, but tablets will be nipping at their heels.
