Materials Needed
1- elastic thread (metal jewelry wire and clasps found in most craft stores can be used.Glass/accent beads can be added for embellishment)
2- sewing needle with eye large enough to accommodate elastic thread
3- mimosa seed pods
4- cooking pot
5- water
Preparation Steps
1- Gather mimosa seed pods after they have turned brown and dried on the tree.
2- Take pods and remove the seeds.
3- Place seeds in colander. Rinse under running water.
4- Place seeds in cooking pot. Add 2"-3" of water.
5- Place pot on medium high heat. Bring to boil.
6- Let seeds boil until they are soft enough to easily put a sewing needle through.
7- When seeds are soft, remove from heat to cool slightly.
Stringing Seeds
1- Measure elastic string so you have enough to go over your head comfortably, adjusting for the length you want for the necklace PLUS enough to tie after you finish stringing.
2- Now comes the fun part; start sewing/stringing the seeds to make your necklace! Yes, it is a rather slow process. Add any accent beads if you'd like. When you're through, secure the necklace ends together.
3-Slightly dampen a folded paper towel and put a dab of olive oil on it. Gently rub the oil on your seed necklace and wipe off the excess. Those seeds will have a gorgeous wood-glow!
