Easy Sewing Project: Simple Fleece Hat
A small piece of fleece, and a few straight stitches, and you'll have an adorable winter hat!
Choose fleece of any color or style to make the cap. Lay the fabric onto a flat surface and cut a piece that's 28" x 30". Lay the fleece so that one of the 28" sides is facing you. On the side that faces you cut slits in the fleece that go from the very edge, in about 5". Make one slit every half-inch or so. Turn the fleece so that the cut edges face away from you and cut slits along the opposite side as well.
With one of the fringe sides facing you fold the left edge of the fleece over to the opposite side. Stitch down this side with a machine or by needle and thread. Clip any loose threads.
Fold one fringed edge of the cylinder shape over to the other fringed edge, all the way around, so that it becomes half the size it was. The folded edge of the fleece will become the part of the hat that goes around the forehead and around the back of the head. The two fringed edges of the fleece will become the top of the hat.
Cut a piece of fleece that's about a half-inch wide and 24" long. Lay this strip out on the table with the wrong side facing upwards. With both sides of fringe aligned, lay the hat on the long tie, and position it so that all the fringe is above the tie and the rest of the hat below the tie. Tie the long piece around the hat once, flip the hat over, then tie again. Tie a knot this time. Trim the long tie off to be about the size of the fringe pieces. The finished hat has the appearance of a large pom-pom on top.
Fold the lower edge of the hat up a few inches to create a cuff that goes around the forehead and behind the head. Or, wear it like it is without folding the edge up. If you want you can stitch or glue on an applique or other embellishment. If you use fabric glue make sure it's washable. These fleece hats only take a few minutes to make but will hold up for years to come!
