A Drool Worthy Sewing Book
My review of "The Party Dress Book" by Mary Adams.
I am a complete book and magazine addict. Occasionally, I go to Barnes amp; Noble, grab an enormous stack of books and magazines, find a comfy chair and just read. Unfortunately for them, I don't buy that big stack. But sometimes I buy one or two.
For years, I would tell people that I didn't read much. I couldn't discuss the latest hot fiction title that everyone was reading so therefore I came to the conclusion that I just didn't read. It was a few years ago, when I looked down at the enormous stack of books that I took out of the library, that it occurred to me. I read a ton of books - all non-fiction. I probably read five non-fiction titles per week. I am at the library at least twice a month and sometimes twice per week! I get sewing books, blogging books, cook books - oh cookbooks! What a great way to try out new recipes and see if a cook book is worth buying.
So today I want to tell you about the most delicious, non-fiction book that I found recently. It came up as a suggestion on Amazon.com for me and I purchased it, sight unseen - which I have to say is pretty frickin' rare for me. Usually I am the type of girl who sees a book on Amazon or on a blog. I see if I can find it at the library or Barnes amp; Noble. If so, I go look at the book or check it out. If I absolutely think the book is incredible, I purchase it (usually by shopping around for the best deal or using a member coupon). I never buy a book sight unseen.
And then I saw this...I had to have it.
If I could create store, this book would be in it! It is spiral bound so it lays flat when you are reading. It is dripping with images. It is chock full of ideas and techniques for creating the most amazing dresses you have ever seen. The foreword is by Amy Sedaris (who is a client of the author Mary Adams). And for the best part?...It comes with a pattern.
Honestly the book costs about the same, if not less, than buying a pattern. That is why I snapped it up.
I don't sew garments generally. I make Halloween costumes for my kids. Occasionally my eldest and I alter some clothes from the thrift store. I make quilts and purses. My experience with garment construction has lacked training. I am mainly self-taught, with a few lessons from my sister. Without her looking over my shoulder, well, I am not very confident or skilled when it comes to clothing. Perhaps I am simply not very confident.
However, this book caused me to add a dress form to my Christmas list this year and my big sis bought it for me. So I am hoping that once my splendid sewing space is done, I will not only finish all of the U.F.O's (unfinished objects) in my queue (including the quilt I have been working on for ten years) but I may just have an incredible dress in my future.
