Leopard Print Monogram Apron
Every good kitchen chef needs an apron to keep errant spills at bay. This fun and sassy leopard print monogram apron project only takes a bit of time and bit of sewing know how to complete.
For this project, you will need:
- One black cotton apron (pre-made aprons can easily be found in most craft supply stores)
- Leopard print fabric
- Fabric scissors
- Fabric marking pen
- Large monogram or letter stencil (available at scrapbook supply shops)
- Wonder Under (available at fabric supply stores)
- Cotton towel
- Iron
- Ironing board
- Brown or gold colored thread
- Sewing machine
To start, lay the wrong edge of the leopard print fabric to the rough edge of the Wonder Under material. Next, carefully attach the sticky sheet to the animal print fabric by pressing with a warm iron for ten to twelve seconds. Allow the fabric and adhesive to cool completely before continuing with your project. (This should usually only take five to ten minutes.)
Place the large monogram or letter stencil on the paper backing side of the piece. Using a fabric marking pen, trace the monogram design onto the backing. Cut out this design with fabric scissors, making sure all cut lines are smooth.
Peel the paper backing off the leopard print monogram. Lay the fabric piece onto the black cotton apron in the position you permanently want it to adhere. (This can also be done prior to removing the paper backing to test where you want the monogram.) Smooth the animal print fabric with your fingertips to prevent any wrinkling.
Dampen the cotton towel slightly. Lay the towel over the animal print monogram. Press the design carefully with a warm iron for about fifteen seconds. Take off the towel, smooth with a quick swipe of the iron, and cool completely.
Carefully place the apron into place on a sewing machine. With gold or brown colored thread, stitch around the outside edge of the monogram to secure it. (This will enable multiple washings of the apron without the leopard print fabric peeling off.) Enjoy your new apron creation!
TIP: Additional embellishments (buttons, fringe, ruffles, etc.) can also be added to this project to add additional detail. For a sassy addition, consider creating a "lipstick" pattern from bright red fabric and adhering in the same fashion as the leopard print monogram. This project also makes a great Mother's Day gift idea!
