Sears, Roebuck and Co

The name alone has become etched in the memory banks of millions of Americans. A store that has sold everything from sewing machines to kits to build your own home - is a legacy.

The Sears Archive is a site that is up and running and contains one hundred years' worth of the stores history. The site shares the story of the founding of Sears and includes a chronology of the milestones and events spanning from 1886 to present day.

Sears began the R.W. Sears Watch Company in Minneapolis back in 1886, yes selling watches. Richard Sears was a station agent for the Minneapolis and St. Louis railway in North Redwood, Minnesota. In his spare time to earn a little extra money he sold lumber and coal to local residents. He eventually began reselling watches and must have found that it churned a profit and so in 1886 Sears began the R.W. Sears Watch Company in Minneapolis. The following year, Sears moved his business to Chicago. As his business grew he decided to advertise for a watchmaker and that is when Alvah C. Roebuck applied for the job. The two eventually became partners.

The company continued to grow and in 1893 the store was officially named Sears, Roebuck and Co. - with "and" spelled out and "company" abbreviated.

It's an amazing story it's become a part of our American history. In 1888, Richard Sears began using a printed mailer to advertise watches and jewelry. Then in 1896 Richard Sears added a spring and fall catalog and enlarged the size. Many individuals still remember the joy that the Sears catalog brought families. The catalog became known as the "Wish Book".

The Sears catalog was a delight to children everywhere and they would spend hours turning the pages and creating their wish lists while mothers and fathers saved up their money to purchase these brand new inventions that could only be found in the Sears catalog. It was a book that millions of American looked forward to receiving each year. In 1905 the catalog featured full color and texture wallpaper samples, and a swatch of material used in men's suits. The following year, they added paint samples and in 1908, the last year Richard Sears was associated with the company, he offered both wallpaper and paint color sample books to customers.

All this and more can be found on the Sears Archived Website,
