How the Sewing Machine Made Credit Cards Possible
Consumer debt used to be frowned up by Americans, but Edward Clark changed that with a strategic marketing plan.
Going into debt used to frowned upon in America, but that began to change after World War I. Peace time brought the availability of goods, and it also brought on the American Dream. The 'dream' to have all these goods, the 'dream' to get stuff. One problem remained, while the stuff to buy was available, money to buy the stuff was not. The attitude regarding going into debt that was prevalent among the American consumer had to be changed.
The first line of consumer credit was introduced in the United States in 1807 by Cowperthwaite amp; Sons Furniture Store in New York City. Their line of credit was known as Installment Credit. A down payment had to be made by the costumer, then that was followed by monthly payments of equal amounts. It is very similar to non-credit card loan payments we make today, with one difference. Cowperthwaite amp; Sons Furniture Store was very discriminating as too who they would allow to purchase furniture on their installment credit plan. They hand picked the customers that were extended this installment credit to keep those who defaulted to a minimum.
For the next 40 or so years, this became the adopted practice of furniture stores, the only type of retailers that would allow consumers to purchase goods on the installment credit plan. Since the American consumer still frowned upon being in debt, this seemed to be a good arrangement. The rich purchased their big ticket furniture items on credit and never talked about it, the poor made their furniture or did without.
Enter Edward Clark, co-founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. In 1850 Isaac Singer began to mass produce and market his invention of the peddle sewing machine. A sewing machine at that time cost around $100, more than the average consumer had in cash, so sales were slow.
Edward Clark found a way to merchandise these sewing machines that would change the American consumer's attitude about debt and sell sewing machines. Edward Clark did not advertise the sewing machines, he advertised the advantages of going into debt by using installment credit. Going into debt for the purchase of a sewing machine would enable a person to be more productive, earn more money, and improve their position in life.
Thanks to Edward Clark, every American can live their 'dream' of having stuff. We can buy now and pay later on everything from a pack of chewing gum to a new home.
Who would have thought that American Consumer Debt would have started with a Singer sewing machine?
