PURDY Everyday - From Self Taught Sewing to Upcycling Success
A year ago, Joy didn't know how to sew. She taught herself the skill, and uses it to create unique accessories from upcycled fabric. She also holds beginners sewing workshops to teach others.
She decided to market what she created and named her fledgling company PURDY everyday. She started blogging about her work; and she and coworker, Christina McDonough, have been busy ever since. Within a few months Joy and her friend were selling creatively sewn items at events like Cincinnati's Second Sundays in Over the Rhine and the Seasonably Chic Showcase. She has a backlog of orders for PURDY everyday purses, hats, messenger bags and other accessories
Purdy Everyday Upcycling to Success
What does PURDY everyday mean? "Pretty Unique Recycled Designs Everyday."
Upcycling was another one of Joy's big ideas. From the beginning she's created all of her sewn items from recycled materials to "make the world a better place one product at a time." That Green inspiration has proven to be the creative spark that sets her items apart from those around her. In creating her sewn items, Joy uses gently worn clothing, upcycliing the fabric into a brand new life as a perfect purse or hat.
For one recent upcycling project Joy created accessories using once-worn bridesmaid's dresses. She's learned that tee shirt sleeves sewn together make really cool scarves and retooled ties are perfect for messenger bags. Her blog entry "Ugly Pants Equals Cute Purse" documents an ugly pants Cinderella miracle. Joy upcycled a pair of pants that should never have existed in the first, transforming them into a lovely purse.
Purdy Everyday - Cool, Chic and Free to do Whatever You Choose
When you're self taught you create your own path. You can move forward as quickly as you choose; and you don't have to follow anyone's rules but your own. That goes for any art or craft, and especially for Joy's new sewing skills. That creative freedom is evident in her work.
One look at her line of clothing and accessories and you will see no sign of junior high sewing skills so many women never seem to move beyond. In teaching herself to sew, Joy skipped right over those sewing class A-line skirts and one-pocket gingham aprons. She stitched her way into self taught sewing creativity.
