How to Sew a Reversible Flannel Baby Blanket Using a Sewing Machine
Sewing reversible flannel blankets is easy. These blankets may be sewn as baby blankets and make very nice gifts for new mothers. This is a great sewing project for beginning sewers.
You will not need a commercial sewing pattern to create this blanket. If you are sewing a baby blanket, use one yard of flannel fabric for each side of the blanket. Because the seams will be enclosed, there is no need to finish the raw edges before sewing.Be aware that flannel does shrink so it is best to wash and dry it before using it in a sewing project. . Make sure that you press the washed fabric well before sewing the blanket.
Place the fabric right sides together and pin, matching raw edges. Make sure that you leave a large space for turning the fabric right side out when the blanket has been sewn. Seam allowances for this sewing project that tend to work well are either a 3/8 inch or ½ inch seam allowance. Begin sewing the seams, removing pins as you sew. When you come to the corner, leave the needle down in the fabric, pivot to turn the corner, making sure that you are still sewing an accurate seam allowance, and continue sewing down the other side. Continue sewing in this manner until you are close to the area where you started sewing. Stop a few inches from your beginning stitches, so that you will have a large enough space to turn the blanket right side out.
After the blanket has been sewn, press the seams as they have been stitched, and then clip all the corners diagonally. This allows you to get a nice sharp corner after the blanket has been turned right side out. Although not completely necessary, pressing the seams open creates a nice look to the finished blanket. Pressing the seams open is accomplished by putting the blanket down on the ironing board and running the tip of the iron in the seam on all four sides of the blanket.
Turn the blanket right side out and use a point turner to create nice sharp corners. Press the blanket well again, focusing on the seams. You will have an open space on one side of the blanket that can be closed in several ways. If you like hand sewing, you could slip stitch the opening closed. A very easy way to close the opening is to top stitch or edge stitch, using an edge stitch presser foot, all the way around the blanket. This gives the edges of the blanket a nice look and also encloses the opening. When the blanket has been completed, be sure to press it well so that your sewing project will have a professional look.
